A Day for the Planet: WWF-Philippines National Youth Council’s Earth Day 2025 Celebration
May, 14 2025
Awareness of environmental issues continues to grow and young people building a sustainable future are playing more important roles.
The fourth batch of WWF-Philippines’ National Youth Council (WWF-NYC) led the Earth Day 2025 celebration in Navotas City with the theme "Building Connections for a Sustainable Future." NYC members Ron Caguliodo, Dani de Leon, and Ricky Asuncion promoted environmental stewardship by bringing together conservation advocates and young leaders committed to protecting the planet for future generations. The Earth Day celebration brought together 50 participants, including youth leaders, community members, volunteers, and WWF-NYC members, in partnership with the City Government of Navotas, through the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), and the Navotas City Council of Youth Development. The event served as a platform to strengthen ties and connection between the young people and the environmental sector, encouraging them to lead and take action within their local communities.
The day began with an inspiring message from EnP. Yzabela Nazal-Habunal, Acting CENRO of Navotas and a former NYC Batch 1 & 2 member, who set the tone for a day of learning, collaboration, and engagement. She emphasized that “Earth Day is an annual reminder to care for our shared home. We must make conscious choices in our daily lifestyle that help conserve the Earth and its resources.”
One of the event’s highlights was an interactive learning session using comic strips about mangroves, a hands-on coloring activity, waste management boards focused on the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and plush toys used to illustrate the life cycle of a sea turtle. The session focused on two pressing environmental topics: forest and mangrove conservation, and ocean and species protection. Participants explored the vital ecological roles of forests and mangroves in regulating climate, supporting biodiversity, and preventing floods, while also addressing the threats of deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable coastal development.
The session encouraged actionable changes like supporting reforestation and minimizing plastic use. The conversation then shifted to marine conservation, highlighting the urgency of protecting coral reefs, sea turtles, and marine biodiversity from plastic pollution, overfishing, and habitat degradation. Youth participants were inspired to adopt eco-friendly habits, reduce single-use plastics, and support sustainable tourism practices.
The Power of Collective Action
The Earth Day celebration highlighted the power of collective action, demonstrating that everyone can make meaningful contributions to environmental progress.
The participants voiced their commitments to forest conservation, marine protection, renewable energy and plastic waste reduction with a Youth Pledge for a Sustainable Future. The pledge served as both a symbolic and practical affirmation of WWF-NYC’s mission to empower the youth to take the lead in efforts combating climate change and biodiversity loss.
The 2025 Earth Day celebration in Navotas built on the success of WWF-NYC’s 2024 event “Building Connections: Planet vs. Plastics” in Donsol, Sorsogon which focused on responsible tourism, whale shark conservation and combating plastic pollution. It underscored how grassroots efforts reflect the power of local engagement and youth-led action in advancing environmental causes.
As the Navoteño participants made their pledges, they reminded themselves that lasting change begins with informed individuals ready to take positive action for the planet. While the Earth Day celebration may last only one day, its message endures, sparking a new wave of young environmental leaders dedicated to building a more sustainable future.
